Alwyn Morris: From Gold to Gaming

Alwyn Morris - Morris Mohawk Gaming GroupAlwyn Morris' leadership, determination and conviction have won him Olympic gold as an athlete and the Order of Canada for work with drug and alcohol prevention programs; now he leads one of the most important business ventures in his community's history.

Morris recently took on the role of chief executive officer of the Morris Mohawk Gaming Group (MMGG), the company that holds the only North American gaming licence for the Bodog brand. This puts Morris front and center for one of the largest online entertainment companies in the world.

"This position allows me to go beyond what I was doing as a bureaucrat, and I feel that is my responsibility to my community," says Morris. "In essence, we have a deal that allows the Morris Mohawk Gaming Group to utilize the Bodog brand name in North America. This will create jobs and opportunity in Kahnawake as well as lay the groundwork for Bodog's global expansion."

Morris was formerly Kahnawake's associate director at the Mohawk Council of Chiefs which made him a principal advisor for the Council in many forms of government and third party negotiations. He met the billionaire founder of Bodog Entertainment, Calvin Ayre, through mutual friends, and shortly thereafter, the two began laying the groundwork for the deal that is in place today.

"We started talking over dinner, expanded on the discussion afterward, and all of a sudden it became a reality," says Morris. "It was the right time, for the right people, for the right deal."

Morris was born of the Turtle Clan in Kahnawake, a key territory of the Kanien:keha'ka or Mohawk First Nations located just outside Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Kahnawake is the home of both the Kahnawake Gaming Commission (KGC) and Mohawk Internet Technologies (MIT). KGC is a 10-year-old world-renowned provider of regulation and security for the online gaming industry, while MIT houses nearly half the planet's online gaming company servers. The MMGG deal with Bodog, however, is one of a kind.

"Bodog is not just simply a gaming company, and that is very different for us," says Morris. "From the community perspective, our interest is really related to the openness of Bodog to work within Kahnawake and create new opportunities. You don't often find a large company wanting to expand operations and work with a First Nations community to do that. It's a credit to Calvin's vision."

With his experience as a community leader and gold medalist at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Calif., Morris feels that he is perfectly positioned for the new challenge.

"Athletics and business are very similar: commitment and focus on a goal and making it happen," says Morris. "The other art is having fun with it. You don't just get in to business or international sport because it's a job. You have fun with it. If you have fun with it and enjoy it then everything else seems to fall into place."
